Fires are very common and can occur anywhere, in the forest, at home or at work. Fires at work are particularly dangerous because of greater number of people present in a smaller space. Therefore, it is required for every employee to be well informed on how to act in a case of fire to minimize damage and prevent unwanted human casualties. Even in best equipped and modern buildings fires can occur when least expected.
Sometimes, despite numerous trainings and evacuation plans, fire in the workplace can be very dangerous and terrifying. Every employee who does not know what to do in a case of a fire, is not only a danger to himself but also to others around him. So when fire alarm goes off, it is extremely important to know what do and how to act. This can be relatively simple as one of the most important things is to know where is the fire fighting equipment. Also, knowing the shortest way to get out of the affected area safely and to be able to guide anyone who does not know the building. However, sometimes determining the source and the severity of the fire or contacting the local fire department can save your life.
When the place and size of fire is determined, there are four golden rules that should be followed:
-
activation fire alarm
-
evacuating the building
-
calling the local fire department
-
dealing with the fire by using fire extinguisher or fire fighting pumps (of course, if trained to operate such equipment)
No mater how big the fire is, the first thing every employee needs to do is turn on the alarm. Then work with others on evacuating everyone from the building as quickly as possible. But first inform the local fire fighting unit of the location, size and strength of fire and if anyone is in great danger. This will help firefighters to put out fire quickly and effectively before it spreads. It is recommended to tackle the fire blaze while still small, but if fire starts spreading without control, leave immediately.
If you can identify the source of the fire and feel that you can deal with it, use portable fire fighting pumps, but always have an escape route in mind in case something goes wrong. It is extremely important to switch off any electrical devices before trying to put out the fire. Never tackle a fire if there are gas leaks or hazardous items in the building. Also, make sure you know the location of all fire extinguishers, but if fire spreads without control, leave the building immediately.
